Abjad (문자) - Huruf Gabungan (더블 문자)

In Indonesian, beside the 26 single letters, there are also compound letters. As the name implies, these letters are made with two letters, which is considered as a single letter. These compound letters have different sounds too.

In this article we will cover two kinds of compound letter: Diftong (더블 모음) and Digraf (도블 자음)

Diftong is a combination of two vowels treated as a single letter. In the above example, pandai is made of two syllables (pan-dai) not three (pan-da-i).

Digraf is a combination of two consonants treated as a single letter. So, like diftong, in the above example, akhir is made of two syllables V-KVK (a-khir), not VK-KVK (ak-hir).
