Suku Kata (음절) 2

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

Let us review about syllable in Indonesian again. A syllable is made of a single vowel, or a combination of one or more consonants and a vowel. In other words, the rules in making syllable is:
  1. Must contain one and only one vowel (V).
  2. May have one or more consonants (K).
A syllable can even have up to 5 consonants! We will cover it later.
Earlier we have learned making combinations of a consonant placed before a vowel. Now we will try placing a consonant after a vowel.

VK / KVK (받침)

모음+자음 ak si

자음+모음+자음 pen sil

Like Korean, a consonant can be placed after vowel letter, but in the same line instead of under. In this case, the sound of the consonant doesn't change. Not all consonants are formally used after vowel, although they can. The following table shows a list of some 받침  and how they sound.

받침 sound example meaning
b bab ()
d a-had (아) 일요일
f 아프 ma-af (마아프) 미안
h 아하 ba-sah (바사하) 젖다
k rak () 선반
l mal () 백화점
m lem (을렘) 접착제
n ban () 타이어
p sip () 줗다
r 아르 bir (비르) 맥주
s 아스 tas (따스) 가방
t cat () 페인트

영습

Because all letters are written on the same line, it would be easier to read when you know the syllables a word is made from. Try to separate the following words into syllables. Figure out which form the syllables are in (V / KV / VK / KVK). Then, read aloud and rewrite the words on the empty columns. Some rows are filled as an example.
